The Mother’s Choice Child Care Home on Bowen Road opened its door to children seeking forever families in 1987. Since then, over 3,100 children have walked through its doors on their journey to finding loving and permanent homes.
Over the years, Mother’s Choice has worked tirelessly to understand the most vital needs of babies and toddlers, many of whom have experienced trauma in their early childhood and even in utero. We believe this is essential in equipping them with a strong foundation as healthy attachment in a child’s first three years of life underpins their ability to form healthy relationships into adulthood.
Dr Charmaine Tidmarsh, our Director of Clinical and Residential Programmes, explains, ‘It would be easier to simply pick clothes from one huge cupboard in the morning, but we want the children to understand that, despite their current situation which warrants group caring, they are individuals, with personal belongings. We go to great lengths to ensure each child has his or her own wardrobe.’
Our Early Intervention Therapy team leads the ‘First Step Program’. They ensure our children’s footwear is personally moulded to fit the shape and unique pressures of his or her feet. Our kids’ gross motor development is monitored through our in-house physiotherapy sessions.
We are committed to ensuring that each child in our care feels seen as an individual being with a distinct identity – much like their footprints.
Baby steps are the first of many that our children will take throughout their lives. We remain guided by the hope that, on their journey that begins with us at Mother’s Choice, they will carry these memories of love and connection far beyond their early years.
